Original artwork. This artwork is about paradoxes. We would love a perfect world. But isn’t it that beauty derives its positive vibe from that which is jarring or unpleasant? In my work I have been creating sustainable art pieces which are made of high end fabric that are left over from the industry. I work with what is available and add extra value to it. With ‘Het nieuwe westen’ I have added the uncomfortable: acrylic paint (read ‘plastic’). The contrast between the two materials makes the softness and beauty of the textiles stand out.
The composition is inspired by the neighbourhood ‘Het nieuwe westen’ in Rotterdam, where we have lived for 7 years. A neighbourhood where the rough edges amplified the sense of community.
This artwork ‘Het Nieuwe Westen’ is made of high end upholstery fabric (amongst others: De Ploeg en Kvadrat) in beautiful warm and deep colours. I use the leftovers from furniture manufacturers that are just too small for them to use, but are still brand new and beautiful. I painted some blocks with acrylic paint.
Size: 50 x 60 cm (excluding wooden frame), framed in a natural wooden frame.
